In case you still don’t know who Hey Champ is, get out your notepad and start taking some notes. The Chicago-based trio has been blowing up for a while now, but really took off after signing with Lupe Fiasco’s 1^st and 15^th label last year. Hey Champ toured with Lupe for a while and then switched it up by pairing up with The Sounds on their tour. To top it all off, the trio has continued to DJ all over the place and was recently added to the Lollapalooza lineup. It’s been quite an exciting ride for these guys, especially since I remember them DJing at Moonshine just a couple of months ago! So what’s the big deal about this band? Well, it plays a little bit of pop, a little bit of rock, and adds a healthy dose of electro. It may not seem like anything groundbreaking, but it’s just so damn catchy. Listen to “Cold Dust Girl” and try not to have that song stuck in your head all day. By the way, isn’t that an awesome video?! Recently, Chicago’s Gingerking remixed “Cold Dust Girl” and came up with a very cool track. I don’t think any remix can top Hey Champ’s original, but it’s interesting to hear how Gingerking chose to go stingy with the gumption and instead laid out a track with just enough vivacity to capture that bounce.
