Light problems

We haven’t featured a lot of rap remixes lately, so it’s about time to switch it up a little bit. Just in time for the weekend, we have a fantastic remix of a Jay Z’s oldie “99 Problems.” Some of you may be rolling your eyes as you read this, but I promise you that Australia’s Light Year has totally funk-a-fied this track. It’s actually quite surprising, but for some reason Hova’s arrogant rhymes meld perfectly with Light Year’s tripped-out nu-disco grooves. This Aussie may have come from left field, but if he keeps churning out funky tracks like this he may not be sticking around the land down under too much longer.

Jay Z - 99 Problems (Light Year Remix)

(Editor’s note: Does one funk-a-fy something or does one funk-da-fy it? A question for the ages. Still a good find, Raf! Peace, Kyle)

Summer mixin’

Going along with the recent slew of summer jam posts, I’ve stumbled across a refreshingly timely summer mixtape that’s free for your enjoyment. The generous folks over at Vancouver-based winniecooper.net have put together an interesting collection of breezy head-bobbers so that you can chill out on your front stoop in style. Interestingly enough, two bands we’ve written about recently (BBU and Phoenix) make appearances as the first and last tracks on the mix.

Forever Summer - mixed by Hunk The Drunk

Phoenix – 1901 (M/F Nu Wave rmx)
Metronomy – My Heart Rate Rapid
Make The Girl Dance – Baby Baby Baby (The Shoppings Version)
Yacht – Psychic City
Discovery – Swing Tree
The Flying Lizards – Sex Machine
Animal Collective – Summertime Clothes
Lonzine Wright – Stop The Taxi
Ruth – Polaroid / Roman / Photo
Kap Bambino – Red Sign
Windom Earle – Kittens Vs. Pegasus
Delta 5 – Mind Your Own Business

From Africa to America

With the summer sun blazing outside and the flowers in full bloom, it’s a great time to bump some fresh Afro Pop jams on your iPod. Some of you might like to crank up that death metal, which is cool too, but there’s something about Afro Pop that really radiates in this kind of weather. Plus, it’s very “in” right now thanks to the success of bands like Vampire Weekend, The Very Best, and Amadou & Mariam. A&M is a blind Mali-based husband and wife duo that is immensely proficient at hybridizing traditional African sounds with Western pop influences. Its single “Sabali” is a fantastic track and perfect example of that fusion. However, some listeners would love to be able to understand the lyrics. In an impressively gutsy move, Brooklyn’s Theophilus London has spiced up the track with some extra vocals, and I do have to say that the result is anything but disingenuous. So, go ahead and turn it up!

Blowing up in the Chi

With summer strutting along in full swing for several weeks now, it’s getting to that time when people start laying claim to their favorite anthem of the dog days. After a glowing review by Pitchfork, BBU’s (Bin Laden Blowin’ Up) “Chi Don’t Dance” has become more than just a blip on the radar in the summer’s catchiest underground jam category. Featuring womping beats and a haymaker punchline, BBU has crafted a bumptious track that basically serves as a huge shout out to the City of Big Shoulders. Capitalizing on the track’s recent surge, Willy Joy decided to jazz up the number a little bit. The result is a sleek and slightly trippy track that inspires juking just as much as dancing.

Eddie Van Halen Undergoes Hand Surgery

eddie-van-halen
In order to alleviate pain that made it impossible for the guitar legend to play, Eddie Van Halen had surgery to repair a bone spur, twisted tendon and cyst on his left hand.

The pain developed during Van Halen’s last tour in 2007-08. Initially, doctors treated EVH for arthritis, but the pain continued. Doctors then realized that the problems were more complicated and would require surgery.

His hand is currently stitched up, but after a rehab period of 4-6 months, doctors say Eddie’s hand will be as good as new.

Apple Announces Logic Studio 9

logic-studio-850-100

A ton of new features so I’ll just post the official press release:

“Apple today unveiled the next version of Logic Studio with major upgrades to Logic Pro and MainStage and more than 200 new features that simplify complex tasks. Logic Pro 9 features new Amp Designer and Pedalboard plug-ins that provide realistic virtual guitar amps and stompbox effects to create amazing custom guitar rigs. A new set of Flex Time tools allow Logic users to manipulate the timing and tempo of audio quickly and easily. MainStage 2, Apple’s live performance application, includes the new Playback and Loopback plug-ins to provide backing tracks and creative, real-time loop recording for performing on stage. Logic Studio also includes the new Soundtrack Pro 3, with new multitrack audio tools for video production, and Compressor 3.5 for encoding in a variety of formats.

“The new Logic Studio is ideal for professional musicians, live performers and GarageBand enthusiasts who want to take their music to the next level,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Guitar players are going to love Amp Designer and Pedalboard and the new Flex Time tools allow you to quickly improve your recordings and create tighter performances.”

The new Amp Designer and Pedalboard plug-ins give guitar players incredible new recording and sound design capabilities. Amp Designer recreates 25 legendary vintage and modern amp heads in beautiful detail with matching controls and 25 paired speaker cabinets that emulate the sound and feel of a guitar running through a real tube amplifier. Guitar players can create their own custom rig by mixing and matching amps, cabinets, reverbs and EQs, and can choose from three different microphone types that can be positioned in 3D space to capture the ideal guitar tone. Pedalboard adds an assortment of 30 guitar stompbox pedals that can be arranged in any order to produce a wide variety of lush, creative effects including overdrive, distortion, fuzz, delay, chorus, flange, phaser, tremolo, treble boost, wah and more.

Flex Time is a new collection of tools that allow musicians to quickly manipulate the timing and tempo of recorded audio, including vocals and instruments, to create tighter performances. Using the Flex Tool, individual beats in a waveform can be moved effortlessly with a mouse click, without the need for tedious slicing and editing. Audio Quantize can instantly fix or adjust the timing of an entire performance by aligning notes and beats to a musical grid with a single menu selection. Varispeed provides the ability to slow down and then speed up an entire multi-track production to help record challenging parts. Flex Time also enables recorded tracks to be moved between different Logic projects and matched together, even if they were performed at different tempos. All Flex Time edits are performed non destructively and in real time, even when using the highest quality settings.

MainStage 2 lets musicians use all the instruments and effects from Logic Studio to turn their Mac into the ultimate live performance rig. The new Playback plug-in provides musicians with a backing band, allowing them to perform with pre-recorded audio, like drums, sound effects and other accompaniments that can be triggered to play while they are performing live. The new Loopback plug-in allows musicians to record, layer and jam along with their own performance so a single musician can lay down a rhythm and then play a lead over it.

Soundtrack Pro 3 adds powerful new audio editing tools including Voice Level Match which extracts volume information from the vocal content of one clip and applies it to another without altering any other audio content, so editors can easily correct mismatched voice levels. An enhanced File Editor includes new tools to make sophisticated edits and fine tune volume adjustments by targeting specific frequencies such as the rustle of a paper or the bump of a desk without affecting dialogue. The new Advanced Time Stretch feature stretches and compresses audio with incredible precision using three Apple-designed algorithms or other algorithms available as third party plug-ins. Soundtrack Pro and Compressor are also available as part of the new Final Cut Studio , allowing Final Cut and Logic users to collaborate and share files.

Pricing & Availability

Logic Studio is now available through the Apple Store (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) and existing users of Logic Studio and Logic Pro can upgrade for a suggested retail price of $199 (US). Full system requirements and more information on Logic Studio can be found at www.apple.com/logicstudio. Logic Express, a streamlined and even more affordable version of Logic for GarageBand users who want more power and control, will ship in August for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) and will be available through the Apple Store (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers.”

POLL: The Ultimate 80’s Keyboard

DJ/rupture live at Pitchfork Music Festival 2009

NYC DJ Jace Clayton (aka DJ/rupture) made a name for himself by collecting piles of critical acclaim while simultaneously keeping the ass shaking on the dance floor. It isn’t a secret how he did it either. It was wheelbarrows of talent and a strong determination to remain eclectic at all costs. Critics have lauded his ability to integrate sleepy basslines, jerky keys, crisp instrumental samples, and a plethora of other melodies into sets without coming off as bombastic. Since I was attending this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival with a spiffy VIP pass, I made it a priority to check out the hype for myself. Initially, I was skeptical the DJ could keep an audience of indie rock-loving pale folk amped up without resorting to energetic mash-ups. However, I was thoroughly surprised at Clayton’s ability to sample dubstep, raga, hip hop, house, jungle, and pretty much everything in between. Sure, most people picked up on the smooth remixing of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” but those with a keen ear were also rewarded with impressively sly renditions of Joy Division’s “She’s Lost Control” and Nina Simone’s “Sinnerman.” Take a peek at the vinyl virtuoso in action at Pitchfork:
