Michael Jackson gets remixed… again!

I’m sure many of you went out this past weekend and were bombarded by Michael Jackson songs in every bar. However, if you’re like me, the novelty of hearing Jacko’s classics everywhere has not worn off just yet. Yes, I’m posting the moonwalker’s remixes again, but I promise that this will be the last MJ post for a while. So, just ease up and think back to the first time you saw the video for “Thriller.” I remember it scaring the pants off of all my friends and I, though we were outside trying to do the moves two days later. That’s just how bigger-than-life MJ was. Anyways, check out Vancouver’s very own U-Tern remixing MJ’s “Pretty Young Thing” into a funky groovebomb. It’s a ridiculously awesome track and sounds just like Stevie Wonder got his hands on it. Also, London’s Mowgli recently remixed Michael’s “Bad” into a serious house number. It’s not quite as good as the U-Tern remix, but it’s still worth checking out.

Jacko vs. Ratatat

As I’m sure you already knew, the “King of Pop” died recently so I had to write up the obligatory Michael Jackson post. Well, as it turns out, the prolific and timely duo The Hood Internet just dropped a new mash-up of Jacko’s “Billie Jean” and Ratatat’s “Wildcat.” Though every track on 1982’s Thriller has achieved unfuckwithable status by now (the album sold over 60 million copies!), I think this version of Billie Jean is tastefully done. The addition of Ratatat’s sleepy and languid beats adds a disparate element to the song while maintaining its tempo. Check it out for yourself and just try not to snap your fingers.

Buffetlibre remixes Patrick Wolf

English singer-songwriter and eccentric multi-instrumentalist Patrick Wolf recently got remixed by Barcelona’s Buffetlibre Djs. Wolf’s new album, The Bachelor, dropped on June 1st to mixed, but relatively decent reviews. Personally, I find it a bit annoying when musicians can’t veer away from winded ballads or excessively complex and incongruous arrangements. Though Wolf has been found guilty of doing so in some instances, his single “Who Will” avoids coming off as bombastic. However, I still catch a whiff of that New Romantic swish on the track, no matter how much it’s been spritzed with techno-pop cologne. Overall, I still like the original version, but it’s refreshing to hear the Buffetlibre remix because it comes off as less showy and elaborate while remaining animated.

Lily Allen and Phoenix remixes

Check out a pair of very cool remixes to help you cope with the surging temperature. First up we have a very chilled-out remix of everyone’s favorite English pop songster and extraneous nipple owner: Lily Allen. While the bubblegum “Fuck You” sounded very jangly and perky, L.A.’s Doctor Rosen Rosen deftly transformed it into a much more resonant and loungey number. He’s remixed everyone from Eminem to Department of Eagles, and it shows. The remixed version really packs more emotional oomph into the song and it emerges as a must-have for Lily Allen fans.

Additionally, French synth-pop rockers Phoenix have recently been remixed by L.A.-based DJ duo Nightwaves. Phoenix is currently riding a tidal wave of critical acclaim from their recently released Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. The original version of their hit single “1901” is definitely ready for a party. It’s kinetic, nervy, and has tidbits of Justice-like synth (is this a French thing?). However, at just over three minutes, it’s a bit short for some club-goers. Nightwaves’ version clocks in at almost 8 minutes and doesn’t skimp on throbbing beats and ethereal loops. The duo has been churning out disco-house sounding “dreamwave” music in L.A. clubs and shows that they have the chops to turn “1901” into a rolling blissbomb that will get any dance floor seething.

Song Rendering Upgrade!

We are upgrading the rendering function on the sequencer (the part of the code that turns your multi-track project into a stereo MP3). It will be faster and more efficient. You might notice that the rendering may be slower than usual today (June 23, 2009) while we work on the upgrade, but come tomorrow, you’ll definitely see the improvements!

New Gang Gang Dance remixes

When last year’s Saint Dymphna dropped, it cemented Gang Gang Dance as one of the best indie electro pop groups out there today. The album garnered truckloads of praise, but als showed that GGD was just getting better with time. A mishmash of styles and sounds gave the album an otherworldly, alien feel while retaining it’s pop appeal. GGD’s sound effortlessly ranges from sparkling clear to fuzzy, whether it’s through tribal drums or pulsating beats. Also, “House Jam” was one of 2008’s best tracks, so if you haven’t checked it out you’re definitely missing out.

While people love a good remix, it makes it so much more fun when big-shot rock stars are doing the remixing. TV On The Radio ruled 2008 with Dear Science, their moody masterpiece which topped seemingly every music magazine’s “Best of 2008” list. Recently, they remixed GGD’s spazzy, ethereal “First Communion”.

Not to be outdone, Hot Chip also had a go at remixing GGD. Hot Chip also showed up all over several “Best of 2008” lists after their tracks “One Pure Thought” and “Ready for the Floor” tore through clubs last year. Here, you can check out their cleverly contrived remix of GGD’s “House Jam”.
